Question 104: What doth God require in the fifth commandment?

Answer: That I show all honor, love and fidelity, to my father and mother, and all in authority over me, and submit myself to their good instruction and correction, with due obedience; and also patiently bear with their weaknesses and infirmities, since it pleases God to govern us by their hand.

Eph. 6:1, 2, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise.”

Col. 3:18, 20 “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord”; “Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.”

Eph. 5:22 “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.”

Rom. 1:31 “Without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful.”

Prov. 23:22 “Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.”

Eph. 6:5, 6 “Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eye-service, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.”

Col. 3:19, 21 “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them”; “Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.”

Rom. 13:1-8 “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained ofGod. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.”

Matt. 22:21 “They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith He unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”
